Clarence Ethelbert (Nib) Gammon, 87, husband of Betty Gammon, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2008 at Chaleur Regional Hospital, after a short illness. Born in Campbellton, Nib was the eldest child of Cecil and Nellie (Sansom) Gammon. Clarence grew up in Bathurst where he attended local schools. He graduated from BHS in 1938 and then went to work at Bathurst Pulp and Paper. In 1940, Nib enlisted in the 2nd Princess Louise Hussars and went overseas in 1941. In 1945, while stationed in England, Clarence married Betty Ward. He returned to Bathurst in 1946. Nib worked as an instrumentation supervisor at the former Consolidated Bathurst Pulp and Paper, where he became a member of the 25 Year Club. After his retirement from Consolidated Bathurst in 1978, Clarence went to work at the former English School Board Office as a maintenance and busing supervisor. For many years, Nib was an active member of the 2nd Battalion Royal New Brunswick Regiment (North Shore), where he rose to the rank of major. Later, he was appointed Honorary Colonel. A past president, Clarence was involved in the work at the Herman J. Good Royal Canadian Legion Branch #18 for many years. Besides the Militia and the Legion, Nib was a Town Councilor, a member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Nepisiguit Salmon Association, and a member of First United Church. Clarence enjoyed his weekly card games at the Officers Mess and the Legion. His hobbies included woodworking. Nib made many ‘whirly-gigs’ and wooden toys for his grandchildren. Another passion was gardening. Nib started many of his plants from seeds in his basement. Clarence was a very accomplished handy man, able to fix electrical, plumbing, or carpentry problems. He even built the family cottage at Youghall Beach. Nib had a good sense of humor. He was a prankster, but often had many pranks pulled on him by his friends or co-workers. Clarence is survived by his wife, Betty, his 3 sons, Michael (Heather), Peter (Edie), and Clive (Andrea), and 8 grandchildren, Darren, Kerry, Josh, Katie, Alan, Bryce, Trent, and Lindsay. He is also survived by 1 brother, Bill, and 3 sisters, June, Helen, and Mary. Clarence was pre-deceased by his parents, 3 brothers, Harry, Ernest and Robert, 1 sister, Lillian, and 1 grandson, Glenn. A funeral service will be held at First United Church on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to a favorite charity. The arrangements were in the care of Elhatton Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com) of Bathurst.
