It is with great sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our loving Mother MAXINE GOODSPEED (Smith), wife of Donald Goodspeed, which occurred peacefully at Chaleur Hospital, Bathurst, NB. on Friday May 12, 2023, at the age of 83 years, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Springdale, Newfoundland in 1940, she was the daughter of Joseph and Agnes Smith.
She leaves behind her four children: Kimberley, Garry (Kara), Carol-Ann (Geraldine) and Thom (Jennifer).
Eight Grandchildren, one great-grandchild, her cousin Vena and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents she was pre-deceased by seven brothers and seven sisters.
Maxine worked as a nurse’s aid in the local hospital in the late 1950s with many responsibilities including delivering babies and providing care and compassion for which she was known. She later married, moved to Maine, and then settled in Bathurst, NB.
Maxine was a dedicated long member of St George’s Anglican Church and spent many hours volunteering with organizing church functions and rummage sales to support the Church and local community.
Maxine had a wonderful sense of humour and was known and loved for her quick wit and her luck in the Bingo circuit.
Alongside her close friend Grace, she gained recognition for her near Olympic caliber berry picking abilities, even after back surgery, and enjoyed sharing the fruits of her labour as much as enjoying them herself.
Her love and dedication to baseball and the Toronto Blue Jays stayed with her throughout the years and even in her hospital bed she had to have the game on.
Maxine worked hard for everything right until the end, gave more than she got and was happy to do so.
The family would like to thank all her loving friends who came to visit her at the house and hospital and a special thanks to the staff at Chaleur Hospital Palliative Care, especially Wanda, who took exceptional care of our mother during her final weeks.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home and at our mother’s request there will be a graveside service at a later date.
In memory of Maxine, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
Arrangements are in the care of Elhatton’s Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst.
