It is with great sadness that the family of Donald Irvine Smearer announce his passing which occurred suddenly and peacefully at the Chaleur Regional Hospital December 29, 2019 at the age of 85.
Born in Archibald Settlement, he was the son of the late John Smearer and Gladys (Cook) Moore.
He is predeceased by his daughter Carol Joyce, three brothers, Jackie, Thomas and Laurie.
He leaves behind the love of his life Thelma, two sons; Glen (Shannon) and Dean (Heather); four daughters; Donna (Dennis) Gail (Jeff), Colleen (Dan) and Susan (Gary).
He is survived by three sisters, Marjorie of Minto, Gladys Jean of Bathurst and Evelyn of Bathurst. One brother David of Big River. Several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Don thrived on earning his own achievements over the years by being a hard worker in many jobs from delivering groceries by horse and buggy, working on aircraft in Montreal, mechanic at different places in Montreal and Bathurst, service manager at Stothart’s Toyota, opening up a garage in the 1980’s until 1996 when his cancer set in.
He was very active in the community and when he volunteered his time to whatever cause he was in 100 percent. He loved working for the Bathurst Heritage Museum and was a member of Lodge St. John, No.27, F&AM of the Masonic Order.
He enjoyed music and played many musical instruments such as guitar, piano and organ. His favorite hobby was refurbishing antique vehicles, collecting several vintage motors over the years.
The family would like to thank Joyce Ronalds who was his caregiver for 17 months and making his stay at home pleasant and longer. Also like to thank the Palliative Care Unit for making his last days peaceful.
Visitations will be Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 at Elhatton’s Funeral Home, (www.elhatton.com) Bathurst. Funeral Service will be held from The First United Church, St. Patrick Street, Bathurst Friday January 3rd, 2020 at 11 a.m. Donations in memory of Donald may be made to the Canadian Cancer society or a charity of your choice.
