Reverend Louis Cyr passed away on 18th October 2003 at the Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst, NB following a brief illness. Born on the 14 September 1917 in St. André du Madawaska, New Brunswick he was the son of the late William Cyr and the late Laura Cyr. Besides his religious family, he is survived by a half brother; Albert Bois, and two half sisters; Thérèse Bois (Collin Mulherin) and Adélaide Bois (Gerald O'Neill). In September 1934, Reverend Louis Cyr began his classical studies at the St-Jean Eudes College in Bathurst, NB. Thereafter, on 7th September 1939, he was accepted at the “Séminaire Sacré-Coeur” in Charlesbourg, Québec to study Philosophy and Theology. Upon completion of his studies in Charlesbourg, Québec, Reverend Cyr was inducted in the Eudistes Fathers on 8th September 1943, subsequently ordained to the priesthood in Charlesbourg on the 10th November 1946. As early as January 1947, Rev. Cyr began his career in teaching. He devoted 27 years to two Eudistes colleges and their young students: 19 years at the St. Louis College in Edmunston, NB and 8 years at the Cardinal Dougherty High School in Buffalo, NY. Early in his teaching career, Rev. Cyr was appointed principal at various schools and; according to his students, Rev. Cyr was “ A very respected Dean of discipline”. Throughout his life as a priest, he served briefly as vicar in many parishes such as the “Bon-Pasteur” parish in Laval, QC, “St-Pierre” parish in Cheticamp, NS and later at St.-Joseph Parish in Rayne, Louisiana and St. John the Baptist parish in Buffalo, NY. After many years of service to the community as a teacher and priest, Reverend Louis Cyr retired in 1982 at the Eudistes Fathers residence in Bathurst, NB where he will contribute his services as a bookkeeper. In 1984, the Université de Moncton honors the achievements of Rev. Cyr by presenting him with an honorary Doctorate of Education. Later, in 1999 the university once again marks the teaching career of a great visionary that helped develop access to higher education in North-Western New-Brunswick by renaming the student residences to “Résidences Père Louis Cyr”. Visitations are at Elhatton Funeral Home, 187 St.George Street, Bathurst Tuesday 21 October, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, 22 October at Holy Family Church, St. Peter Avenue from 1:00 p.m. until time of funeral Mass at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Eudistes Congregational lot in the Holy Family cemetery, St. Peter Avenue Bathurst.
