It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved friend, Mr. Douglas Weldon Henderson, who died on Thursday, August 14, 2025 at the age of 82.
Born in 1943, in Bathurst, New Brunswick, Doug was the son of the late Frances Carsten Henderson and Cora Elizabeth (Weldon) Henderson. Doug’s life was marked by kindness, laughter, service, and an unwavering loyalty to those he loved. Whether through his generosity, quick wit, or ability to listen without judgment, he had a gift for making people feel seen, heard, and valued.
Doug went to Bathurst Grammar School and Bathurst High School. He graduated from St. Thomas University and pursued a career as a teacher. He also served as a principal of Mary Gosnell School in Bathurst for many years. He made a lasting impact not just through hard work but through genuine care for his family, students, colleagues and community.
Outside of work, Doug found joy in hockey and continued to play into his senior years together with his passion for canoeing. He also was a member of the Toast Masters Club and an active and dedicated member of the Shriner’s Association and Masons. He enjoyed snowmobiling in the winter, fishing in the spring, and spent every summer at his beloved cottage at Youghall Beach which was the site of many get-togethers.
He was also a member of the United Church of Canada. Doug loved to sing – not only in the choir but also singing along in his Toyota truck.
Doug is lovingly remembered by his partner, Joyce Playfair and her daughter, Vanessa, and family. His spirit lives on in the hearts and countless others who grew up alongside of him.
A celebration of life for Doug will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at the First United Church in Bathurst with a reception to follow where friends are invited to gather, share stories, and honour the remarkable person he was.
Burial and committal will take place in Miramichi Cemetery in Miramichi on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 at 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
Arrangements are in the care of the Elhatton Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst, NB.
