Stephen Carey, of Bathurst, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully, at the age of 68, after a short, yet intense, battle with cancer. He found peace surrounded by loved ones.
In his lifetime, Stephen was defined by many passions. He was a lifelong night owl who loved to spend the early hours listening to a little bit of Blues and a lot of Rock’n’roll while homebrewing. He loved to share these passions with others. Many will remember the hours of laughter in the brewery while listening to music, playing the guitar or harmonica, or reminiscing about the exploding root beer and other experiments.
Stephen was not ready to retire as he loved his job. He was proud of his 40+ -year career as a truck driver, where he had driven over 3-million miles, accident-free. Stephen enjoyed his time on the road, but it was the camaraderie and banter with his coworkers that he looked forward to each night. Stephen truly valued the friendships he made while trucking.
Stephen loved spending time with his family. He took immense pride in the life he made with Darlene, his wife of 46 years, and their daughter, Shauna. Stephen also cherished his new role as “Baboo” to his grandson, Parker. This role may have been cut short; however, Stephen packed a lifetime of memories in a few years. He could tell the craziest stories or just say the wildest things. You never knew what adventure you were about to undertake with him, but you knew you wanted to be on that adventure. He was forever a kid at heart and filled our home and hearts with unconditional love and laughter.
Stephen is survived by his loving wife, Darlene; daughter, Shauna (Jim); his grandson Parker; his sisters Heather (Dale) and Martha (JC); and his brother James (Sophie); and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Edith Carey, and his brother David Carey.
A celebration of life will be held in Bathurst during the summer.
The family requests donations be made to the Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation, Friends of the Moncton Hospital, or to a charity of your choice in Stephen’s honor.
