With a celebration of a life well lived we, the family, announce the passing of our beloved Dad, Alton George Smith on Thursday, April 2, 2026 at the Chaleur Regional Hospital at the age of 94. Born in South Tetagouche, NB, he was the son of the late Raymond and Mary (Smyth) Smith and was married to the Late Essel (Clouston) Smith for 66 years.
He is the loving father to Darlene Smith, Glenna Boucher (Denis), Floyd Smith (Marlene Legacy and her daughter Madison), Ellen Smith (Don MacGregor) and Ardith Smith (Bob Allain).
"Grampie" will be missed by his grandchildren, Courtney Jennings, Shawn Boucher (Meagan), Craig Boucher (Nicole), Raymond Smith (Megan Doucet and her son Cameron), Allison Smith, Phillip Smith (Charline), Jessica Woodbury (Keith) and Sophia MacIntosh (Paul). His cherished great grandchildren Asher and Ada Boucher, Henry Alton Smith, Sadie Boucher, Jackson Woodbury and Ava MacIntosh.
He is survived by his loving sister Edna Jennings and brothers-in-law Hughie Clouston (Edith) and Murray Clouston (late Edna) and sister-in-law Ruth Clouston (late Hazen). Also by several nieces and nephews. Alton was pre-deceased by his sister Evelyn (Charles) Good.
Dad was a farmer, prospector and an employee of Consolidated Bathurst for many years. He loved gardening and being in the woods. His 4-wheeler, tractors and camp brought him many years of enjoyment. He and mom loved the camping trips with the family and were always willing to go on an adventure.
Our family and Dad are incredibly grateful to the wonderful staff of the Extra Mural Program for their kindness, dedication and compassion. He loved you all and the visits to him allowed him to remain in his home until his passing. Also special thanks to his doctor Sophie Arseneault for your kindness.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 from 7-9 pm at Elhatton Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday April 9,2026,11:00 am at the First United Church, Bathurst NB .
In memory of Alton, the family requests donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
