It is with much sadness the family announces the death of their mother, Mildred (Whelton) Wilbur, of Bathurst, New Brunswick, May 17, 2009 at the Chaleur Regional Hospital, Bathurst.. She was born October 9, 1914 and enjoyed a long, productive and gratifying life devoted to her faith, family, and community. Mildred was the fifth child in a large farming family in Black Rock, Glou. Co., N.B, the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Louise (Thompson) Whelton. Mildred was predeceased by her husband Harvey in 1972; and her son Clary in 2006. She will be dearly missed by her devoted children: Percy (Norma) of Saint John, N.B; Mary Alma (Guy) Smith of Bathurst, N.B; Dorothy (Dave) Constable of Burlington, ON; Marilyn (Steve) Morgan of London, ON; Her daughter-in-law Jayne Wilbur, of Hampton, N.B. Her grandchildren Kim, Percy, Patrick and Sharon Wilbur; Stephen, Karalyn, Barry and Sarah Smith; Andrew, Christy and Michael Constable; Sarah, Nathan and Brandon Wilbur; and 10 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sisters Dorothy Whelton of Black Rock, Caroline Landry and Mary Lewis, both of Montreal, Bernadine Riordon of Pokeshaw, and her brothers Joseph Wheltonof Montreal and John Whelton of Black Rock. She was pre-deceased by brothers Bedford, Willard, George, Byron, Vincent, Edward, and Donald and sisters Nina, Nora and Helen. Also left to mourn are many nieces, nephews and dear friends. As a young woman, Mildred worked in Toronto and Montreal before returning to Bathurst to marry and raise a family. She had a deep faith in God, was immensely proud of her family, and keenly interested in her Irish heritage. Mildred was a busy, hard-working and involved person who would, without hesitation, lend a hand to help whoever was in need. She will be remembered for her warm hospitality, her optimism, her great sense of humour and keen intellect. She had a gift of story-telling and had the ability to recall and relate countless stories of long ago. She loved people, books, genealogy and gardening. Mildred touched the lives of many through her various volunteer pursuits in parish, neighbourhood and community involvements. She was a member of Holy Family Council Catholic Women’s League and served as Parish and Diocesan President, as well as having served in executive positions at the Provincial level. She was a CWL member for over 60 years and received the Maple Leaf Service Pin. She had been a member of the Scout Mothers’ Group and Club 200 of Holy Family Parish; she organized fund-raisers for the CNIB and was Executive Director of the NB Division of the Canadian Heart Foundation and was honoured as campaign chairperson. In the early 1970s Mildred enjoyed several years in establishing, operating and managing the first Gift Shop at Chaleur General Hospital, on behalf of the Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. She was awarded a Life Membership Memorial for having “given over 600 hours of volunteer time to the Ladies Auxiliary Chaleur General Hospital during l973”. She was also appointed to the Provincial Executive as archivist. In 1972 Mildred was presented with the coveted insignia of the St. John Ambulance Association, by Governor-General Roland Michener in Ottawa. This was in recognition of her service to the Association, a group she was instrumental in forming in Bathurst. She served two stints at Montreal Expo ’67 in her capacity with the Brigade. She worked throughout the province and attended EMO and Casualty Simulation workshops outside the province. In later years, Mildred was active in THEOSAM and Chaleur Evening Stars. Friends may call at Elhatton’s Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com) for visitation ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­ on Tuesday from 7 to 9 and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 and Thursday from noon until time of Funeral. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday (May 21, 2009) at 2 p.m. from Holy Family Church. Interment will be at Holy Family Parish Roman Catholic Cemetery, Bathurst, N.B. Donations may be made to the Clary J. Wilbur Memorial Scholarship Fund or to a favorite charity. Thank you to so many who have enriched and contributed to Mom’s long life and well being.
