Geraldine Skinner Murray White Young, a proud wife, mother, grandmother and friend who lived her life caring for others died peacefully October 4 in Fredericton after a long illness. Born in Bathurst in 1925, Gerry and her beloved husband, Duncan Leach Young, who predeceased her, delighted in the life of the Bathurst area. Her first dedication was to her family. She also had strong interests in her community and her favorite pastimes of gardening and enjoying the outdoors. Her late parents were also from the Bathurst area: William (Billy) George White, a successful lumberman and May Murray White, a nurse. Gerry and her sisters Ursula Noble and Lynn Connolly, and brother, William (Billy) White, lived an idyllic childhood in Bathurst and at Caron Point. Gerry and her beloved sister Lynn, with their striking blond good looks, were educated together at Netherwood School, Rothesay and Mount Allison University, Sackville. She had a keen dedication and sense of duty in caring for her friends and extended family. Gerry, Duncan and their five children were legendary for their closeness as a family. Gerry is survived by their children: Roger (Suzanne) Young and children, Natalie, Frederick, and Sarah, of Rothesay; Caroline (Julian) Walker and children Matthew, Meg, and David of Fredericton; David Duncan (Margot) Young and children Kate and Robert of Fredericton; Margaret (Robert) Lockhart and daughter Helen of Tillsonburg, Ont.; and Hugh (Amanda) Young and children Michael and Hannah of Bathurst. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Some of the best family times were at Miscou Island and at Tetagouche Lake where the family gathered in the summer, on weekends, and especially in the hunting season. Many will remember Gerry for her elegance and style, but she was also a bit of a tomboy growing up and she was an avid hunter. She was known to have picked a partridge off the hood of the old Land Rover, much to the delight of Duncan. While at “the lake”, especially, Gerry quietly enjoyed the after-dinner stories about family exploits, romance and adventure. Potential entrants to the family were carefully scrutinized and the lucky ones passed the test. Gerry was a private person who enjoyed the family home of many years at 450 Tremblay Court. In their later years, Duncan and Gerry built a retirement home at Anderson Pt., Bathurst. Gerry made the kitchen with its fireplace the center of their home. The property, with its gardens and house, was an important project for Gerry, and Duncan was known to remark that Gerry wanted to build “a small house with many, many big rooms!” She was keenly interested in the history of the Bathurst area, and historians consulted her for her encyclopedic knowledge of North Shore families. She was a dedicated member of the board of the cemetery of the First United Church, Bathurst as well as being active in the IODE, and in First United Church. A growing interest during her life was adult literacy. Gerry became a dedicated tutor in the Laubach for Literacy program, and was inducted into the organization's Hall of Fame in 2002. Tragically, in recent years Gerry developed Alzheimer's disease. She died in Fredericton at York Manor Nursing Home. The funeral service was held on Saturday, October 8 from First United Church, St. Patrick Street, Bathurst with interment at the First United Church West Bathurst Cemetery. Rev. Ray Francis conducted the service. Remembrances to the Alzheimer's Society of New Brunswick or Laubach Literacy New Brunswick or a charity of one's choice would be greatly appreciated by the family. Arrangements were in the care of Elhatton's Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst.
