Alfons B. Buzas

  • Alfons B. Buzas 1932-2022

  •  Date of Death: February 23, 2022
  •  Location: Bathurst

It is with heavy hearts the family announce the passing of Alfons "Al" Buzas, of Bathurst, which occurred on February 23, 2022, at the Moncton City Hospital.

Born in Toronto, Al was the only child of the late Mr. and Mrs Thomas and Louise (Miknevicius) Buzas of London, Ontario and is survived by his son Michael (Anne) and two grandchildren, Michelle and James Riley.

He was predeceased by Patricia (Connelly) Buzas, his wife of fifty-six years.

Al spent his formative years in Southern Ontario and after graduating high school, attended Michigan State University earning a degree in geology and a masters in geophysics. He came to Bathurst in 1960 with The Anaconda Company. Initially as an exploration geologist, he assumed various roles, finally managing the Caribou mine. Later in his career, his entrepreneurial flair saw the creation of Elmtree Resources Ltd, a limestone producer in Bathurst that is now run his son by Michael nearly 50 years later.

Al was a life member of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, serving a term as District VP and a long-time member of the Prospectors and Developers Association. He served on a number of public, private and crown corporation boards and was chairman of the school board for four years.

Al was an avid salmon fisherman and a founding member of the Nepisiquit River Salmon Club. He was also a long-time member of Gowan Brae Golf and Country and enjoyed curling in his earlier years. Al was a Rotarian for over thirty years and actively promoted its activities.

Nothing gave Al more pleasure than family time especially with Michelle and Riley whom he adored. And he always looked forward to the extended family gatherings at Youghall beach where the nieces and nephews joined the older generation over many evenings together.

Al and Pat enjoyed travelling and had a goal to reach every continent, narrowly missing their goal due to inclement weather in Antarctica! When they could, winters were spent in Florida, which became an adopted second home with many close American friends.

Al will be sorely missed by the many nieces and nephews that were dear to his heart. Although he is no longer with us, we can all cherish the fond memories and be comforted by the fact that he and Pat are together once again.

According to Al’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. The family will arrange for a celebration of life at a date to be determined. Donations in memory of Al may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements are in the care of Elhatton’s Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst.
