  • Sylvia Sweeney 1942-2025

  •  Date of Death: January 19, 2025
  •  Location: Bathurst

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Sylvia Sweeney, of Bathurst, New Brunswick, who passed away peacefully on January 19, 2025 surrounded by her family at the Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst, at the age of 82 years.

Born on Bell Island, Newfoundland, she was the first child of the late Thomas Mugford and the late Ursula (Penny) Mugford. She was part of a large family with eight siblings.

In 1959 she married the love of her life Bernard (Bern) Sweeney and together they created a loving family of seven children.

Sylvia’s greatest joy came from family gatherings where the entire family would enjoy feasting on turkey and a traditional Newfoundland “jigs” dinner. Her kitchen was the gathering place for anyone who walked through the door. Her welcoming demeanor was always followed by putting the kettle on (or having a “shot” or two) which led to the laughs and conversations we will always cherish and remember. You could always find her sitting in her favourite chair either crocheting, reading or watching her favourite show. Her wicked quick sense of humor and her flirtatious behaviour always brought a smile to everyone’s face.

She was a dedicated mother to her “special needs” daughter Patricia whom she loved dearly. Through her lifelong dedication, she, Bern and Patricia were always together like “three peas in a pod”.

Sylvia is survived by her loving husband Bernard (Bern) Sweeney; Children: Jenny, Nancy, Tommy, Patricia and Gary and two predeceased daughters Beverly and Barbara. Grandchildren: Christine, Allana, Jennifer, Amanda, Craig, Shantell, Derek, Tiffany, Krista, Brandon, Christopher and Kaycha. She is also blessed to have sixteen Great-grandchildren: Greyson, Austin, Tyler, Kaylee, Alayjah, Hayden, Dominic, Austin, Chloe, Gage, Gavin, Oaklyn, Ashton, Ellyana, Aryella and soon-to-be-arriving Hudson; Great-great-granddaughter Ava; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service held at a later date on Bell Island, Newfoundland. Message of condolences can be sent through the funeral home website: www.elhatton.com
