Bathurst – It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Mr. Frederick “Junior” Payne, 77, husband of Gail Payne (Brown), of Miramichi Road, NB. Fred passed away on Monday, March 23, 2026, at the Chaleur Regional Hospital in Bathurst.
Born in Bathurst, Fred was the son of the late Frederick and Margaret Ann (Salter) Payne. A hardworking and devoted man, he spent 34 years working at Brunswick Mines. Before and after his years in the mines, he also worked in the woods—a role he embraced with pride, resilience, and a deep sense of purpose. In his early days, that work included a trusted team of horses, a passion that stayed with him throughout his life as he followed horse hauls near and far.
Fred will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Gail, and their two daughters: Catherine Foran (Mark) of Little Bartibog, NB, Krista Ford (Andrew) of Utopia, NB
One of Fred’s greatest joys in life was being a grandfather. He loved—and was deeply loved by—his six grandchildren: Wynston, Huxley, Everett, and Tennyson Foran, and Frances and Arwyn Ford.
He is also survived by his brother and five sisters, all of Bathurst: Adrian Payne (Donna), Mona Payne, Lois Payne, Edith May Scott (Kirk), Margaret Ann Kerr (Raleigh) and Carol Payne.
His mother-in-law: Rita Brown, as well as his sisters-in-law: Shirley Allain (Raymond) and Judy Brown and brother-in-law: Robert Brown (Franceline).
He also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews.
Fred was predeceased by his sister, Diana Payne Lavigne (Douglas) and his brother-in-law, Edgar Brown (Helen).
Fred was immensely proud of his daughters and supported them unwaveringly throughout their lives. He will be remembered for his steady presence, his hardworking nature, and the love he carried for his family and friends.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
His family will be hosting a farewell gathering this Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Four Rivers from 4 to 7 p.m. Family and friends are warmly invited to stop by, tell a tale and raise a glass in memory of Junior.
