Dr. Peter Yao

  • Dr. Peter Yao 1926-2025

  •  Date of Death: August 20, 2025
  •  Location: Bathurst

It is with great sadness that the family of Dr. Peter Yao announces his peaceful passing on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at the age of 98, at his home surrounded by loved ones.

Peter is remembered by his wife Dawn, whose nearly 60-year partnership with him was the heart and foundation of our family. He was the devoted father of Kimberly (Kevin) of Saint John, NB., Krista (Patrick) of Cache Bay, ON., and Kara (Shawn) of North Tetagouche, NB.; proud “Pampy” to Robyn (Jared) and Peter Nicholas (Ashley) both of Fredericton, NB.; and G-Pampy to Coleson. Peter’s warmth, love, and presence will also be deeply missed by his extended family and all who knew him.

Peter’s journey began in the Philippines, where he spent his early years working on his family farm, and completed his medical training once he graduated high school. His path later led him to New York, where he trained as a physician at Mount Sinai Hospital, before eventually settling in Saint John, Canada, to begin building his life with Dawn and career. He began practicing medicine in Bathurst, NB, in 1966, and from there practiced in Grand Falls, NB, and Fort McMurray, AB. Finally, he retired back in Bathurst with Dawn by his side in 1997.

Peter's greatest happiness came from knowing his family was safe, healthy, and united. He was content with little but cherished family gatherings where he shared old stories, served "Chinese noodles," and enjoyed quality time with his wife, daughters, grandchildren, and loved ones. His stories conveyed important life lessons, and his generosity was as remarkable as his intelligence. A lover of nature and his property on Yao Beach Road, Peter was often outdoors amongst his cherished pines or tending to his maple syrup in the early spring and grape vines in the summer and fall. Indoors, his favourite place was the computer room, where he would be found nodding his head along to music on YouTube. He taught by example that happiness is found in caring for those you love, in hard work, humility, and the kindness you show every day. He was the root of the family tree, loved deeply, and the reason so many lives have flourished. At Peter’s request, there will be no public funeral or memorial service; a private gathering of family will celebrate his remarkable life. Peter will be missed every day and remembered always, with love and gratitude.

Arrangements are in the care of Elhatton’s Funeral Home, Bathurst (www.elhatton.com).
