Bathurst – Mrs. Janice Smith, wife of the late Donald W. Smith, of Bathurst, passed away Wednesday August 26, 2026, at the Chaleur Regional Hospital, Bathurst, at the age of 82.
Born in Moncton, she was the daughter of the late Horace and Selma (Mitton) Barron.
She is survived by her children: Krista Metcalfe (Peter) of Lower Sackville, NS and Darren Smith (Dianne) of Mill River, P.E.I.
She was the proud grandmother of Noah, Jonathan, Jacob, Matthew, Nathan, Thomas and Benjamin.
Her sister, Arlene Barron of Halifax, NS.
Several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and parents, she was pre-deceased by sister, Ellen Sutherland.
Janice treasured time spent with her family, especially her beloved grandsons. She took great pride in hosting the entire family at her home every Victoria Day long weekend, a tradition she looked forward to each year. Weeks in advance, she would be busy preparing and baking up a storm to ensure everyone felt welcome. These cherished gatherings created lasting memories that her family will hold close and continue for years to come.
Janice also enjoyed spending time with her many friends and church family. She had a generous spirit and was always willing to lend a helping hand or volunteer wherever she was needed.
She dedicated much of her time to serving on the board of Atlantic Baptist Housing and found great joy in visiting the Veterans Unit, where she spent many afternoons playing crib and sharing companionship with the residents.
After health challenges required her to sell her family home, Janice found a welcoming community at The Royale. There, she formed many meaningful friendships with people who became like a second family to her. She especially enjoyed sharing meals, playing crib, and spending time with her friends.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff of the Cardiac and Palliative Care Units for the compassionate care and support they provided to their mother over the past several years.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 3 pm to 5 pm at Elhatton's Funeral Home (www.elhatton.com), Bathurst. Funeral Service will be held on Monday August 31, 2026, at 1 p.m. from Elhatton’s Funeral Home Chapel, Bathurst.
Donations in memory of Janice may be made to the Campbellton Baptist Church, St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church or a favorite charity.
